Alphabetizing when naming

Hi, I just wanted to clarify: when naming a hydrocarbon using its common name, iso- and neo- count in alphabetizing but tert- and sec- do not count, is this correct?

Nah, I got one. Argon walks into a bar. The bartender says "sorry, we don't serve noble gases here." Argon doesn't react.

Cell Notation - which metal to use for anode/cathode

When writing cell notation, how do we know whether to use Pt or another metal? Or would we just write Platinum to be safe?

Unable to watch podcasts

I was trying to rewatch Dr. Lavelle’s podcast lectures and the website told me to download silverlight so I did but it still doesn’t work. I was using safari, and I was able to watch the podcasts last week but now it won’t work. Help please lol

Standard residual entropy problem

This question says "Assume COF2 adopted disordered arrangements in its crystal form, what would its residual molar entropy be?" and the answer is W = 3NA, S = k ln 3 NA = R ln 3 = 9.1 J/K. How would I go about solving this problem? Thanks.

Re: Isothermal

I think this happens because although the overall heat change is zero, work can still be put into the system as heat energy, sometimes very slowly, but the same amount of energy/heat leaves the system so the over heat change is zero and the temperature stays constant.

Re: Reversible and irreversible process

A process is reversible when the overall entropy is equal to zero (isentropic). A process is irreversible when the entropy increases. Hope that helps a little bit

How to identify weak/strong acids/bases

I'm having trouble remembering which compounds are strong/weak acids/bases. Is there a way to distinguish a strong acid from a weak one? or is it more of a memorization kind of thing? Thanks.

Re: Basic and Acidic Oxides

Hi, Acidic oxides tend to contain elements from the right side of the periodic table while basic oxides contain elements from the left side of the table (groups 1&2). So BaO is a basic oxide and SO3 is a acidic oxide

You might be able to if you talk to your TA and he/she has another discussion section at a different time. Usually TA's are cool and will understand, email him/her or talk in person!

A ligand is any ion or molecule attached to a central metal atom
So in the compound [Fe(CN)6]4- there are 6 ligands because there 6 (CN) attached to the iron

Word problem keywords

Does anyone have tips on what keywords to look for in a word problem so we know which equations to use? For example, "work function", "emits/absorbs electrons" implies the photoelectric effect. Anything like that, but for other equations.

Thanks!

Re: Quiz 2 Material

I think there are some MO questions because we won't have to turn it in before the test. We turn in our workbooks right before our midterm, so we'll learn MO by then :)

Re: Diamagnetic Molecules

Take O 2 for example, it has 6 valence electrons each (12 total) but when drawing out the MO energy diagram, you notice that the \prod ^{^{*}}Px and \prod ^{*} Py bond have unpaired electrons (due to hund's rule). Although the molecule has an even number of electrons, it is still paramagnetic. It he...

Hi, this is probably a really basic question, but how exactly do we measure an angstrom? and is a molecule more stable if it has a shorter or length angstrom length between its bonds?

Thanks

Chromium and Copper

Can someone explain why Chromium and Copper are the exceptions in electron configuration? Is there a reason why the electrons have to be in a different orbital?
