Example of a single sided arrow

In lecture on Friday we were told that a normal curved arrow represents the movement of two electrons and a single sided arrow represents the movement of a single electron. What would be an example when a single sided arrow would be used?

Question about entropy change formula with change in T

I am aware that the equation for deltaS=nCln(T2/T1), but is there ever a case where instead of using C you would use R to make the equation deltaS=nRln(T2/T1)? Homework problem 9.13 seems to utilize the latter equation. Why is this? I would assume that we should utilize the fact that Cv=(3/2)R but t...

Reaction Enthalpy given Enthalpy of combistion hmwk8.57

In the instance of this homework problem and others like it (8.57) the molar coefficients are in fraction form. Is this because we are given the Enthalpy of the hydrocarbon? We want the coefficient of the hydrocarbon to be one. If we were to use whole numbers (so the coefficients to the first chemic...

Re: Heat Capacity Units

On page 21 of the course reader it lists that the units of Specific Heat Capacity are kJ.°C^-1.g^-1 and Molar Heat Capacity are J.K^-1.mol^-1. As Lavelle also stated K and °C are, to some extent, interchangeable because they are on the same scale, so kJ.°C^-1.g^-1 is equal to kJ.K^-1.g^-1. I am stil...

Re: Orbitals and shape

I am still unclear on the difference between a subshell and an orbital. I understand that subshells are labeled s,d,p,f... and have different shapes, but then what are orbitals?
