Re: 4.19 Predict shape of molecule

Draw the lewis structure and then determine how many regions of electron density are around the central atom, whether that be in bonds or lone pairs. You can then determine the AXE of the molecule, where X is the number of bonding pairs of electrons and E is the number of bonding pair. The result of...

Naming of Fe(CO)5

When naming the coordinate compound Fe(CO)5, I was surprised to find the name was pentacarbonyliron as opposed to pentacarbonylferrate. Why is this the case?

Re: Lewis Dot Structure and Formal Charge

Both structures are correct resonance structure, and the one with the triple bond is the preferred one because it is more stable. This is because Oxygen is more electronegative than nitrogen, and also because triple bonds are intrinsically more stable than double bonds.

Re: Dipole Moment Arrows

As far as I am aware, both ways are essentially the same with merely a reversal in sign. How it begins/last which way the arrow points is arbitrary as long as you remain consistent with that direction throughout the entirety of the problem.

Re: Aufbau Princple

A half filled subshell in the d orbital is more stable than if there was a 6th electron. Additionally having a half filled d orbital provides more stability than a full s orbital and a d-orbital that is not full or half filled.

Re: All students read this sig fig post [ENDORSED]

I believe that when you are working with constants that are exact (or approximated down to specific number like 3 x 10^8m*s^-1) they are not counted when determining the number of significant figures. Contrarily, when the constants are not exact you should aim to have a larger quantity of significan...
