2014 Midterm Q7 E & F

7E says: The molecule 3-chloro-4,4,4-trihydroxy-3-methylbutanenitrile was produced. Draw the lowest energy Newman diagram for this molecule looking down the C2-C3 bond axis. and 7F is almost the same but asks about the second lowest energy conformation. Can someone explain why the lowest energy diag...

Change in Entropy Formula

I know that the formula \Delta S=nCln\frac{T_{2}}{T_{1}} is given to us on the formula sheet, but would the formula \Delta S=nRln\frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}} also be given to us? Or is this something we need to know/memorize? I'm not sure if I just don't see it on our "Constants and Equations Used in Ch...

Ether Naming

On page 100 of the course reader, we are given the example of: CH3CH2CHCH2CH2OCH2CH3 .............. | .............. CH3 and the resulting name is 1-ethoxy-3-methylpentane. I remember in class, Dr. Lavelle mentioned that you pick the longest continuous C-C chain because that usually also has the sub...

Oxidation Numbers

Can someone explain the rules for oxidation numbers/states a little bit more for me? For example, in the course reader we saw MnO_{4}^{-} , and we figure out that the total charge is -1, one O_{4} charge is -2, and the total O_{4} charge is -8 and because of these things the charge for Mn is +7. Wha...

Re: Homework Problem 14.17

Hi! For a) The cathode half-reaction would be: MnO^{-}_{4}(aq)+ 8H^{+} (aq) + 5e^{-} \rightarrow Mn^{2+}(aq)+ 4H_{2}O (l) and the anode half-reaction would be: 5Fe^{2+} (aq) \rightarrow 5Fe^{3+} (aq)+ 5e^{-} (you can factor out the 5) Adding these two ...

Re: Confusion about K and Q and Equilibrium

The course reader actually says: 1. ΔG° = -RT ln (K) 2. ΔG = ΔG° + RT ln (Q) The first equation is ΔG°, not ΔG. This makes sense because in the first equation, the system is at equilibrium, so ΔG = 0. Maybe this will help it make more sense: ΔG = ΔG° + RT ln (K) 0 = ΔG° + RT ln (K) - ΔG° = RT ln (K)...

Standard Enthalpy of Formation Clarification

I understand that to find reaction enthalpies using Hess's law or bond enthalpies, the problem you are trying to solve must give you certain information or else you can't use those methods. However, since for standard enthalpy of formation you are just looking at a table to find your information, ca...
