Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

Still having trouble with knowing where to start counting the carbons when there is a double bond, any clarification If there is only a double bond in the molecule then you start counting on the side which gives it the lowest number. If there is a functional group and a double bond, then you give t...

I had the same question. In the answer key or point distribution is says 4pt for identifying 4 correct functional groups, so I assumed it would be.

Re: Transition Steps

I believe the dash arrows are only shown during the transition step to indicate what molecule is attaching and which one is leaving.

My friends say discussion isn't mandatory and you can attend whichever one you'd like in his class.

Re: Strategies for studying for the final

I'm doing the practice finals and the midterms (again) and returning back to the topics/ questions that I had a hard time with. I just re-do the homework questions for that specific topic until I know how to do it well.

Re: Stability of the Formation

The gauche conformation would be more stable. Because the eclipsed has steric interactions and I believe torsional interactions. But when you look at the gauche conformation that is staggered with an angle of 60° versus the eclipsed by H conformation where it is eclipsed but the angle is at 120°, wh...

Re: Help Drawing Newman Projections

It's a bit difficult to explain. First draw 2-methylbutane (4 carbon chains and a CH3 in the second carbon, also draw all of your H molecules attached to the carbons). The C1-C2 refers to where the the molecule would be split for the Newman projection. The first three molecules would be.. so CH3-CH(...

Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Dear Dr. Lavelle, Thank you for being such an amazing professor! I admit, at the beginning, I was afraid of taking your class because I've always had a hard time understanding chemistry. I was honestly at the point where I thought I was a lost cause when it came to solving anything that had chem in ...

Julie Barreto 3A wrote:how would you draw out 2-butene or anything with a number in front of it ???

The -ene refers to a double carbon bond, while the 2 refers to the carbon in which the double bond begins. Therefore 2-butene will be c-c=c-c

Another question pertaining to this. Will it be specified if we have to name the compound with the IUPAC name or the common name?

Re: Winter 2015 Midterm Question 2 and 3 D

for every question with bond enthalpies vs enthalpies of formation, will the question specify what they want? The question usually specifies it. The pattern I have encountered is that when they ask for bond enthalpies, they generally come with a table of bonds (H-O, C-C, etc). and when they want en...
