How do you know what equation to use when finding the pH?

I was looking over question 7 in the second to last practice final and I don't understand how it was known to use CH3COO- + H20 = CH3COOH + OH-? Knowing what chemical equation to use is something I still don't understand, if anyone has some pointers on knowing what equation to use I'd really appreci...

Re: Final Exam [ENDORSED]

Based on previous finals it will cover all the material we have learned this quarter. There can be a chance that it will contain maybe a couple more questions on material we have been tested on yet but overall I'd say its an equal amount of everything. Id recommend looking at the practice finals in ...

Re: Quiz #3 [ENDORSED]

MO will be on the quiz but some complex problems about equilibrium that as mentioned require ICE box will not be. Its similar to our last quiz that the prep quizzes had info not going to be on the quiz. Its safe to stick to knowing everything up to page I believe 135.

How do you find the number of attachment possible?

In the second practice quiz for quiz 3 how is it found that (en) has two possible attachments? Is this based of the lone pairs? If so how does oxalato have 2 possible attachments of it has 10 lone pairs? Thank you!

Re: Lewis Structure Octet Rule Exceptions

How do you know by how much an element can break the octet rule? For example, how do we know Phosphorus is allowed to have 5 bonds?

How do we predict hybrid orbitals? [ENDORSED]

I am a little lost on how do we predict hybrid orbitals like asked in the first practice quiz for quiz 2. It asked us to find the hybrid orbitals used in bonding by the central atom for h3o+ and Icl 2-. How do we find this?

Re: Uncertainty

How was 1.1 found for delta v? I am lost on that and how would we proceed if the speed is given along with +_ of a certain amount. For example, a speed of 5+_0.3 m.s^-1. What would we use as delta v to find delta p?

Re: Sig Figs Throughout Problems

Based on previous experiences with Chem classes I've found it easier to keep all values kept to the amount of sig. figs asked in the questions and not round up. Once at the final answer you do the same and leave answer with the amount of sig. figs asked. Basically try not to round so you can keep th...
