Bond Angles of equatorials and axials

In determining where the equatorial and axial bonds should go, is it all just dependent on making sure you are making the appropriate angles of 109.5 degrees between the closest atoms? I'm a little confused to how you should know where to place them.

Relative Energy Differences?

Will we need to know the relative energy differences of the different conformations? In the course reader it often mentions the energy levels in kcals*mol-1 and I was wondering whether it would be beneficial to memorize these energy differences for the final.

pseudo thermodynamic parameters

So I'm having some difficulty understanding how to use the pseudo thermodynamic parameters. What is the whole "pseudo" part mean and how do they operate with organic molecules?

A chemist walks into the bar asking for concentrated sodium hydroxide.
The bartender asks, "Why the long base?"

IUPAC vs. Common names

So I don't know if I simply missed it in lecture, but how do we know when to use IUPAC naming instead of simply using common naming?

Re: Organic Chem and Thermodynamics

I believe both kinetics and thermodynamics can control a reaction, but these competing pathways make up different products in their reactions. A lot of the time the pathway depends on the activation energy.

Re: Vocabulary

I find it helpful to remember the whole exergonic thing by thinking exerGonic -> G(ibbs free energy)! I don't know if anyone would find this useful but it sure helps me keep the terms straight :)

Why do chemists learn about ammonia first?
It's pretty basic stuff...

Re: Quiz Preparation

Hi! Along with the excellent suggestions of the people above me, I found it helpful to go through the examples and self-checks throughout the chapters that we covered (8 and 9). The examples help with learning how to nail when to use a specific equation, while the self-checks are helpful in thinking...

Re: Derivations

I understand that there will most likely not be a lot of deriving during this course, but just in case, I was wondering if anyone had any resources that they found particularly helpful with brushing up on their calculus. It never hurts to be prepared!

Other examples of elements which go through sublimation

I found those elements which go through sublimation pretty interesting but can't really seem to find any other examples of other things besides dry ice which go through sublimation. Has anyone found any other chemical compound that goes through sublimation?
