Why do 8 electrons form a stable shell? [ENDORSED]

I'm pretty sure that others have probably gone over this before but I don't recall having learned why exactly it is 8 electrons that form a stable shell, I know it has to do with electron spins although I'm not sure what dictates it exactly.

Thank you!

Homework Problem Number 98 Chapter 15

Suppose that a pollutant is entering the environment at a steady rate R and that, once there, its concentration decays by a first order reaction. Derive an expression for (a) the concentration of the pollutant at equilibrium in terms of R and (b) the half-life of the pollutant species when R = 0. Pl...

Does a reversible system even exist?

https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-75284706ae3870bfea4fd758227126ae-c I was just wondering that if energy is always transferred in quanta or certain discrete values, then practically can their ever be a reversible reaction? Or do we assume infinitesimally small is equal to the magnitude of such ...

Is there a difference between Thermal energy and Kinetic energy? [ENDORSED]

If thermal energy is the energy that comes from heat, and heat is the result of the faster movement of a substance's particles, which is ultimately nothing but more kinetic energy in its particles. Then do the two have the same meaning?

Universe as a system [ENDORSED]

This might be a stupid question but how is the universe an isolated system?
The energy of an isolated system must remain constant because no matter or heat can be transferred and the system cannot be physically changed (ΔV = 0)
Since the Universe is expanding, how is it an isolated system?
