Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

A question: Is the functional group given preference over a double or triple bond during naming? Or is the double or triple bond given preference over the functional group?

Re: Homework Ch. 2 #30

This is the structural formula of propoxybutane, propoxy comes before butane because the functional group is attached to a shorter chain and is treated a substituent. The longest alkane chain forms the root of the name.

Re: Common Prefix

The prefix iso-, which stands for isomer, is commonly given to 2-methyl alkanes. In other words, if there is methyl group located on the second carbon of a carbon chain, we can use the prefix iso- The prefix neo- refers to a substituent whose second-to-last carbon of the chain is trisubstituted (has...

Re: Graph of first and zero order reactions

You could tell if the graph is a first order reaction or a zero order reaction by looking at what the x and y axes represent.
For example
First order- y axis is ln [a] and x axis is time
Zero order-y axis is A and x axis is time

Re: Rate Laws and Reaction order [ENDORSED]

the stoichiometry of an overall reaction does not necessarily reflect the molecularity of the mechanism. if the mechanism of the overall reaction shown above for ozone decomposition actually corresponded to a bimolecular reaction of two ozone molecules, then the expected rate law would be second-ord...

Adding to this question... Does anyone know how much emphasis will be given on electrolysis in the midterm as professor Lavelle only briefly covered it in class.

Re: Reading the textbook [ENDORSED]

Just a question? Are some of the formulae in the textbook different from the formulae in the course reader? Speaking from experience, i usually find that reading different formulae really confuses me.

Re: 8.75b HOMEWORK PROBLEM

The easiest way to get the answer to such types of questions is to subtract ALL of the bonds that are formed from ALL of the bonds that are broken instead of trying to figure out which bonds remain bonded through the reaction and which bonds are broken. So actually some hydrogen bonds arent broken a...

Re: Cha. 8 HW Problem #57

Just using the values given, you get=>
C2H2 + 2H2 --> C2H6
-1300kJ + 2(-286kJ) - (-1560kJ) = enthalpy of the reaction
-312kJ would be the enthalpy of the reaction
