Re: Practice Problems
Does it matter if the second molecule in the first problem set has the two methyl groups on the same side and the hydrogens on the same side as long as the two highest priority groups are anti to each other?

Re: HW Ch.8 question 8.25
In the solutions manual to this, they say that q reaction + q calorimeter = 0. Is that something you just have to know? or where in the problem does it suggest that the change in internal energy is 0?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers
This is about actual quiz 1... It's about the last two parts of the questions about heat gained and lost. During the winter, the water tank of a locomotive contains 100.0 x10^3 g of superheated steam at 155.0 C which cools to liquid water at 5 C. Assume no steam leaves the tank. b) Calculate the hea...

Re: Reading the textbook
I think reading the textbook is helpful after going to lecture because sometimes I leave lecture with a lot of unanswered questions and the textbook helps expand on details. It does get to be quite confusing sometimes though. Going to the peer facilitated learning sessions are also very helpful to m...

Irreversible vs. Reversible
Is there another way in which we can distinguish between irreversible and reversible reactions other than constant temperature? Is there anything actually "reversible" about a reaction that has constant temperature or is that some arbitrary name?

Re: Understanding why enthalpy is a state function
Could someone explain why enthalpy (which I understand to be heat at a constant pressure) is a state function while just heat is not a state function? Why does having a constant pressure suddenly make heat become enthalpy and therefore a state function?

What makes something spicy? For example, in a pepper what is the actual physical/chemical property that makes us experience "spiciness"? Is it a specific molecule or does it depend on the structure?

Mass of an electron
On page 43 of the course reader it talks about the photoelectric effect and the equation for kinetic energy (Ek=1/2 me-*ve-). I was wondering if the mass of an electron is the same no matter what element is given.
