Chem community is a public site, so you do not even need an account to see the forum posts and replies.

I think the names "electrophilic addition" and "SN2" just refer to what exactly is being added or substituted. I do not think it specifies any information about the number of steps.

The food calorie, denoted "Cal" or "Calorie" is the same as a kilocalorie or "kcal" which is equivalent to 1000 small calories (cal).

Yes, it is usually best to draw the lewis structure. This will make any regions of electron density more clear so you can easily tell whether or not it is an electrophile or a nucleophile.

I understand 4-methyl-octane has the 4 in front because the substituent is attached to the 4th carbon, but how will we know which carbon the substituent is attached to? Will it always be shown?

I already lost 4 points in part a, so I feel like losing a point in part b is getting punished twice.. Anyone know how this s...

Re: Positional Entropy

I think positional and thermal entropy are based on different things, so they are both entropies but they are not the same. Therefore, positional entropy depends solely on the position, while thermal entropy is more dependent on the movement of the particles. I think thermal entropy depends on tempe...

Re: Enthalpy

A state function refers to a quantity that can be determined using the final and initial states only. State functions are path independent. Enthalpy is a state function because the delta H or change in enthalpy can be calculated using the final enthalpy and initial enthalpy. This is useful because i...

Re: Identifying Strong/Weak Acids/Bases

There are not many strong acids, so it is easiest to memorize the main strong acids and strong bases like HCl, HF, NaOh, etc. There is a general rule that organic acids (with carbon) tend to be weak, but that is not always the case.

Short method: There is one mole of gas on the left (reactant) side and 2 moles of gas on the right (product side). Increasing pressure shift reaction to the side with less moles of gas, which in this case is the left (reactant) side. Thus, the reverse reaction is favored and the concentration of Cl2...

Alphabetical order of ligands

On toolbox 17.1, there is an example that names a complex thiocyanato(kN)pentaaqua(III) iron. Why isn't pentaaqua before thiocyanato if ligands are supposed to be alphabetical? Also why is the "(III)" after aqua? Thanks!

Hey Nikki, the best way to think about it is like the equator on the Earth. If you imagine a molecule with the central atom as the center of the earth, the equatorial atoms or lone pairs lie on the horizontal plane through the middle, just like the equator. The axial atoms or lone pairs lie on the v...

Re: Polar Covalent vs. Unequally Shared

I am pretty sure that if a covalent bond has unequally shared electrons then it is a polar covalent bond. So they are the same I think. The unequal sharing is caused by differences in electronegativity that cause an electric dipole moment.

Re: Minimum Indeterminacy [ENDORSED]

So you want to use the equation ΔpΔx=h/4pi. The equation is normally with a greater than or equal to sign, but since it says minimum, just use equal sign. The minimum indeterminacy of position is Δx, so you just solve for Δx using plancks constant (h) and plugging in the rest. Δp=mΔv, because moment...

Will we need to know how to use prefixes and suffixes like hypo, ous, ic, etc. from our own reading and reviewing or will that be covered in class/discussion?
