Determining reduction or oxidation

How do I know a specific reaction with an ion is more inclined to be strongly oxidizing or strongly reducing? Can I determine that just by the characteristics of the ions in question?

Slope of Arrhenius Plot [ENDORSED]

Why is the slope equal to -activation energy/R? How does that make sense with respect to the plot?

Drawing the Transition State

How do you know what the Transition State for the steps of the electrophilic addition reactions look like? Are there any common characteristics between the transition states of all electrophilic addition reactions?

Question about Potential

Can someone please explain to me what potential is. Why do we use it in equations and what does it tell us? I want to really understand it at the conceptual level. Explain like I'm 5!

Question about Gibbs Free Energy

What exactly is Gibbs Free Energy? I understand its equation, but what is the conceptual relationship between enthalpy, entropy, and temperature to give what we know as Gibbs Free Energy?

Understanding Gibbs Free Energy Conceptually

What exactly do the numbers mean when I'm calculating Gibbs Free Energy? I know that it is used to determine the spontaneity of a reaction, but what is it fundamentally as opposed to what it's used for? Why is a negative change in Gibbs free energy spontaneous?

Question about Calculating the Entropy of Vaporization

According to the textbook, to find the entropy of transition at another temperature other than the normal boiling point, you have to break down the calculation into three steps. For example, to find the entropy of vaporization of water at 25 degrees Celsius and 1 bar, you need to 1) heat the liquid ...

Question on Calculating Entropy of Vaporization

In example 9.6 when calculating the entropy of vaporization at temperatures other than the normal boiling point, the molar heat capacity at constant pressure for acetone vapor used in the problem is 4R (about 33 J/Kmol). However, when I look up the value in a data table, it is about 75 J/Kmol. I als...

Question about Heat Capacities at Constant Volume and Constant Pressure [ENDORSED]

In the book it says that the molar heat capacity of an ideal gas at constant pressure is greater than that at constant volume? Why is that?

Question about Molar Enthalpy

I understand that the enthalpy of vaporization is the difference in molar enthalpy between the vapor and the liquid states, but how does one calculate the molar enthalpies of those states? Are they usually given? Is there an equation to determine the molar enthalpies? Thank you.
