Re: Practice Final 2015 #5A
I tried to calculate the formal charge and got +1 so I am also confused as to how it is negative.

Fall 2012 Final #5b
Write the formula for the following coordination compound.
triamminetrichloronickel(IV) sulfate
answer: [Ni(Cl3)(NH3)3]2 SO4
I understood how they got everything except for the 2 outside of the bracket. Can someone explain why it is 2 because I got 1? Thank you!

Re: Why is water always a monodentate?
Both of the lone pairs are on the oxygen and oxygen binds only once to the central metal so it is mono dentate.

Equilibrium Constant vs Reaction Quotient [ENDORSED]
Since you calculate the reaction quotient Q and the equilibrium constant K using the same method, how will you be able to compare the two values to determine the direction it will go? Wouldn't they be the same value?

Why is (sigma 2p) raised to 22 instead of 2? I made the MO diagram and got 2 for CO and 1 for CO+ in the sigma 2p.

The problem asks to draw the lowest energy Lewis structure of HClO3. I drew the Lewis structure as a tetrahedral shape and got zero formal charges for all of them, but when I checked with the answers, it was a trigonal pyramidal structure. Can someone explain what I did wrong and the easiest way to ...

Building Up Principle [ENDORSED]
In the course reader, there was an example pertaining to the Building Up Principle. It was given that Z=6 and (1s^2)(2s^2)(2px^1)(2py^1). In the periodic table, it says (2s^2)(2p^2). I don't understand how the 2p^2 got split into (2px^1)(2py^1). Can someone explain it? Thanks.

Don't you have to double the speed since it is +/- ? Instead of doing the division with 0.55, I used 1.1 and got 3.2 * 10^-32 as the answer.

Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of a 0.155 kg ball travelling at 85.0 m.s^-1. The answer I got was 5.03 * 10^-35 m. On the answers page, they said it was 5 * 10^-35 m. I do not understand how they ended up with one significant figure. I thought there were three so I rounded to three. Can someone...

Can someone explain the Bohr frequency condition? I do not understand its application or where the upper and lower energy values come from for the formula.
