Look in the course reader on page 84 and 85. It has an example of the same mechanism.

The "iso" signifies that it is CH(CH3)2 instead of CH2CH2CH3. If the substituent was CH2CH2CH3 then the answer would be 4-propyldecane.

Extra YouTube Help

Here are two videos I found on Youtube that helped me to further understand REDOX Reactions and Electrochemistry: REDOX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ6FBA1HM3s ELECTROCHEMISTRY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV4IUsholjg I also noticed these videos are really useful to watch the day before a t...

Pneumonic Device

I noticed Dr. Lavelle used the LEO device but I found another one in a YouTube video more useful:

OILRIG
OIL = Oxidation is Loss....(of electrons)
RIG = Reduction is Gain....(of electrons)

Hope this helps :)

Re: Formulas

I find it best if I use the laminated sheet for formulas and clip it up somewhere or attach it to a clipboard and prop that up so that it doesn't take up too much space on my desk and I can always just look up at it for reference instead of trying to find it in on my desk.

Galvanic Cell

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew whether, in the graphic on page 45 on the course reader, or not there was Copper dissolved in the solution in which the cathode is immersed. Or is only the cathode made of Copper? Or both? Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Quiz 3 preparation - Fall 2015

Didn't the question state pentaamminebromocobalt (III)? So it should be neutral. But from what I understand, the questions will not always have the word "ion" after the compound so you just have to use intuition. But also my TA said that if we are asked to name a compound on the quiz from ...

Re: Cis- versus Trans-

You're totally correct but just to add to that, if the compound is cis- then the same elements on the same side can bind in two places to the Lewis Acid versus only one being able to form a coordinate covalent bound if the molecule was trans-.

Re: Chemical equilibrium

It will remain at equilibrium unless some condition of the reaction is changed. For example, if the temperature or pressure is changed then the reaction will move in a certain direction and the same will happen if the concentrations of the reactants or products are changed.

Re: Workbook Prep Quiz Answers

All of the answers are in the correct sig figs except #4 on the Fall 2015 Answers. It says the answer is 3.6x10^(-19) J when the answer should be 3.61x10^(-19) J.

Re: Magnetic Quantum Number [ENDORSED]

From what I understand, the magnetic quantum number is the range between positive "l" and negative "l" so that's why the magnetic quantum numbers for l=1 are -1,0,1. Another example would be for when l=2, the magnetic quantum number would be -2,-1,0,1,2. Hope that helps.

I think you're supposed to determine what "M" is since they're not specifying the metal using the molar mass they gave to you and then work from there but I don't know either where they're getting "sulfide", sorry.

Re: Mass Always Equal?

Since there is a specific ratio between, for example, two reactants for the reaction, only a certain amount of Reactant A will be used in respect to Reactant B so whichever one "runs out" first is limiting the reaction because no more of it is available and the one remaining is in excess. ...
