Number of Steps in Electrophilic Addition

How do we know how many steps there are in the mechanism? For example in the course reader, when looking at the reaction between 2-Butene and HBr, how do we know that both H and Br are not bonded simultaneously but rather in two separate steps?

Galvanic Cells [ENDORSED]

In a galvanic cell, why do we need to include a metal like platinum that doesn't react instead of a solid metal of the aqueous ion in solution?

in a galvanic cell, is the anode the oxidation half- reaction with a negative charge and the cathode the reduction with a positive charge?

Internal Energy and State Function [ENDORSED]

I know the first law of thermo explains how DeltaU = q and w, but I dont understand how this relationship exists if q and w are not state functions but DeltaU is.

Hybridization of lone pairs on elements

When writing the composition of bonds, why do the lone pairs on the atoms have a hybridization? For example in a molecule with a C double bonded to an O with 2 lone pairs on the O, why does the composition of the atom have Osp2 for the electron pairs?

How do we know if certain anions affect the pH of a solution or not. In the course reader, for a solution containing NH4+ and Cl- it says that Cl- doesn't affect the pH, but how do we know this?

In the course reader it says that the Electrostatic Potential Energy is proportional to (q1 x q2)/ r but does that refer to the charges between the nucleus and the valence electrons or the charge between two different atoms?
