Problem 14.11d

Write the half-reactions and the balanced equation for the cell reaction for each of the following galvanic cells:
(b) C(gr)|H2(g)|H+(aq)||Cl-(aq)|Cl2(g)|Pt(s)

In the solutions manual, they seem to balance the cathode reaction basically and the anode reaction acidically. Why did they do that?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers

Can someone please explain how I should approach #11? You divide 49.7 by the molar mass of PbO to get the number of moles, then multiply that by the deltaH to get the heat released by the reaction of that amount of PbO. You then use q=mCdeltaT and solve for m. 49.7g/(223.2g/mol)=0.223mol; 0.223mol*...

Re: 8.49

You use the equation deltaU=q+w. You can use the given deltaH for q, and use the equation w=-PdeltaV=-deltanRT to find w. This gives you deltaU=q+w=deltaH-PdeltaV=-318kJ-2.48kJ=-320kJ.

Re: units

It should be fine to leave the answer in either unit as long as you label it correctly and use the right number of sig figs. You can leave the answer as, say, either 3.0 L or 3.0 x 10^3 mL.
