Re: 2013 FINAL Q6A
Since one of the methyl substituents is on the carbon carbon double bond, it gets numbered as 1. And since the double bonds in cycloalkenes are given the number 1 and 2 when numbering the carbons in the ring, the numbers are given in a counterclockwise order.

Electrophilic addition and Sn2
I am kind of confused when it comes to differentiating these two. Are there any other differences other than electrophilic addition is two steps and Sn2 is just one step?

Re: chem 14B workbook
I don't know if the quiz workbooks from previous years have similar content to quizzes this year, but I've seen people selling their old workbooks for chem 14b on Facebook. They are often a lot cheaper if you want to try that.

Re: Lewis vs Bronsted
I don't know if this helps or not: -The Bronsted definition: an acid is a proton (H+ ion) donor, and a base is a proton acceptor. -The Lewis definition: an acid is an electron acceptor, and a base is an electron donor. Basically both are about acids and bases either accepting or donating electrons o...

Electron Configuration for Silver [ENDORSED]
When I was doing problem 2.43, I initially thought the electron configuration for Ag at the ground state is [Kr]4d^9 5s^2, but the solutions manual says that its [Kr]4d^10 5s^1. Why is one electron transferred to the d orbital?

Re: Orientation of the Orbitals
I am also quite confused by this. I believe that, if we are looking at the p orbitals for example, all three of them can occur at the same energy level. In the course reader they are drawn separately, but online you can find pictures where all of them are combined. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Homework Problem 1.55
For part a all you need to do is use the given energy (wavelength) to find the frequency. To do this you just need to manipulate the given information v/c=3600 cm-1 by multiplying by c, and then plugging in Planck's constant. Just don't forget to convert the meters into centimeters.

G.19 Solutions Manual Explanation
G.19 asks what the molar concentration of K2SO4 is, given that a sample of 1.345 M of K2SO4 of volume 12.56 ml is diluted to 250.0 ml. I know that you have to find the difference between the volumes and then multiply that by the molarity, but why do you have to divide by the total volume? Sorry if th...
