Winter 2016 Q7 B

For the first structure, can someone explain why the answer has cis in it? Or like how we know it is cis and not trans?

Re: Winter Final 2013 6B

To match the names with the structure, you need to look over all the functional groups and know their general compound name and how the endings change for those functional groups. For instance, the carboxyl group is -COOH and since it often acts like an acid it is often called a carboxylic acid. For...

Re: Final 2014 Question 3A

We choose Zn as the anode because when looking at a standard reduction potentials chart, Zn is closer to the bottom and and has a cell potential that is more negative than Cu or Fe. The more positive the potential is the more likely it will be reduced. The anode is where oxidation occurs so Cu and Fe...

Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Thank you Dr. Lavelle for providing so many resources for us. Chemistry has always been hard for me to understand since high school, so it is nice to know that there are many opportunities for me to ask for help when I need it. Additionally, it is cool that you always try to make chemistry fun with ...

Re: Anti vs Gauche

For butane, they are both staggered conformations, but the gauche is when the CH3 groups are 60 degrees and the anti is when the CH3 groups are 180 degrees away from each other. The anti conformation is the most stable out of the two.

Re: quiz 3 naming organic molecules

When asked to name a compound, both the common name and IUPEC name will be accepted. Quite often though, the IUPEC name will be asked so make sure you know that. The common name will not be explicitly asked, so in that case you can use either naming methods. Additionally, many compounds don't have a...

Re: Bruincast Wednesday 2/22 and windows computer help

The bruincast for Lecture 1 on Wednesday 02/22 works for me. I am on my laptop though, so maybe the iphone/ipad link doesn't work? Also, maybe try downloading Firefox because the Silverlight Extension says it does not work on Google Chrome. I'm not sure why Internet Explorer isn't working.

Re: Naming

I think that if it is simply cycloalkane then yes, but if it is connected to something else and becomes something like cycloalkyl then the cycloalkyl is not the longest.

On the "Quiz 2 Winter 2017" post someone asked if we needed to know how to do #9 on the quiz preparation and Chem_Mod replied that yes we do.

Re: Winter 2013 Midterm Q5B

Since they all have the same structure, you can look at their mass. Since CF4 is heavier and has more electrons than CHF3, it is more complex which means more possible arrangements, hence has higher standard molar entropy. Same as you go down the line.

Re: Oxidation [ENDORSED]

Another trick that my high school teacher told us to use was LEO says GER. LEO stands for Loss of Electrons hence Oxidation and GER stands for Gain of Electrons hence Reduction.

Re: Redox Reactions

A redox reaction is a chemical reaction involving a reduction and an oxidation. When you are given two half reactions that are shown as reductions, you need to change one to an oxidation reaction, hence one half reaction needs to be reversed. When you reverse the half reaction from a reduction to ox...

Re: Need some clarification on finding enthalpy for a reaction.

Yes, you use the standard enthalpies of formation in order to use the sum of the standard enthalpies of the products minus the reactants when trying to find the enthalpy for formation. We do products minus reactants, because of Hess's Law and the fact that enthalpy is a state function, hence the pat...

Yes, I did not get one. I asked the UA about it and she said it is a new change for this quarter.
