Diene/Triene

We never went over dienes and trienes in class right because I recall seeing a problem like this somewhere?

Cycloalkanes as subsituents

If you have a cycloalkane as a substituent, does the prefix cyclo get included when alphabetizing? And do cycloalkanes take priority in numbering when they are substituents?

Delta G Double Dagger 2 vs Ea2

So just to clarify, in the second transition step, Delta G double dagger 2 is the distance between TS2 and the original reactant, while Ea2 is the distance between TS2 and the intermediates? Please correct me if I'm wrong, or tell me this is right.

Re: Quiz 2 Thursday question

You do not use the pre equilibria approach if the first step is the slow step. Remember, the slow step is the rate determining step, so just write the rate law for that.

So if the electron is coming from the bond, make sure to place the arrow starting at the bond instead of starting at the atom.

Re: Internal energy of an isothermal system?

Yes delta u is equal to zero in an isothermal reaction. Since the temperature is constant, q=-w because the two cancel eachother out.

Considering Dr. Lavelle intentionally did not give us these types of problems on the hw, I assume that we will not learn it, at least in chapter 8.

Rounding in Hess's Law

Do we round to the nearest whole number when calculating delta H? For example, number 8.55 rounded -15.5kJ to -16.

I don't quite understand when to use the 5% rule, like when Dr. Lavelle says "If you lose $1000 from a $1,000,000 it won't make a noticeable difference."

Re: Fall 2015 Midterm Q1A

Because you need 2 moles of A for every one mole of B. You only have one mole of A, so technically, you'll only be using 1/2 mole of B. A runs out before B does, making A your limiting reactant.

I believe the first priority is to make sure the formal charge is zero. Then, if you are able to form octets without compromising the formal charge you should do so.

Hi! For the units, my high school chem teacher said it would help if you think about it like a stair case. This way, you know which way to move your decimal. I attached a photo of the "metric stairs" to this comment.
