Is there a clear definition for steric strain?

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

It should be the smallest number - from either end of the chain.

Electron flow arrows

When drawing the electron-flow arrows, is it necessary to indicate the dipole of the molecule(s) (by writing either δ- or δ+) to explain why we are drawing the arrows? Or do arrows suffice?

Starting Organic Chem

Since we have started the organic chemistry portion of the class, will the lecture still be based off of what is in the course reader? Or is it shifting to the other green book, Introduction to Organic Chemistry?
Just trying to figure out which one to bring to lecture.
Thanks!

Re: Quiz 2 Winter 2017

Is there any place that all of the course reader quiz 2 answers (written out, long, and explanatory) are compiled in one place? I know there are the answers on this site.

Can someone please explain the demonstration that happened in class today? I was there but I couldn't see it very well not could I hear much of what was going on.

Thanks!

Re: Bruincast

I was unable to attend lecture today and I tried to watch lecture videos on bruincast but there were technical errors or the video just wasn't there. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me temporarily? Will this be resolved or should I figure out another way to review the lecture? Thanks

Isolated Systems [ENDORSED]

In the course reader, there are three ways of changing the energy of a system, but they only apply to closed or open systems. How does one change the energy of an isolated system?

Ka assumptions

Do you always have to back up your assumption when assuming (for example) 0.1 M - X is about equal to 0.1M when the Ka is less than 10^-5 with the percent ionization?

Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

Heisenberg, Schrodinger, and Ohm are riding in a car. They get pulled over. Heisenberg is driving and the cop asks him, "Do you know how fast you were going?" "No, but I know exactly where I am," Heisenberg replies. The cop says, "You were doing 55 in a 35." Heisenberg ...

Are solids and liquids not included in the reaction quotient expression?
I know they are not included in the equilibrium constant calculation but I don't know if it applies to reaction quotients as well.

Thanks!

Sigma/Pi Bonds

Can someone explain this please? It was mentioned in the lecture today but I didn't really get it

"Sigma bonds refer to hybridized orbitals.
Pi bonds refer to unhybridized orbitals.
Geometry follows hybridization."

Thanks in advance!

Could someone please give me a solid, clear definition of electron affinity? I understand ionization energy and atomic radius and their trends in the periodic table, but I don't think I fully understand electron affinity.

Re: 1.11 Different Series

When you say a Lyman series always transitions to n=1, do you mean that this is where the electrons come to rest (at energy level=1?)

Just a little confused on this part & hoping some clarification will help! Thanks

Re: Calculating Molecular and Empirica Formulas

I've read in a few different sources that it is acceptable to round to whole numbers when the number calculated is within one tenth of a whole number. If it is not, the ratio values should be multiplied by some number that will bring all of the values to whole numbers. That being said, 4.87 is a dif...
