Alkenes and Functional Groups

Hello mates!
I had a question regarding if functional groups can affect whether the mom carbon chain will be alkane or alkene. Lets say we have a aldehyde connected to a pentane, will the double bond within the aldehyde change the pentane to pentene or would it still be pentane?
Thank you so much!

HW #4.40

Hey buds!
The question states "The activation energy in organic reaction is known to be 125 kj/mol. Will this reaction occur at room temperature?" the answer is no but I was wondering how do we come to that solution?
Is it something we memorize or can this be worked out?
Thanks in advance!

Hello ya'll!
Can someone please explain to me how number 9 is done? Since Dr. Lavelle stated we should know how to do this one, I'm hoping someone can show me!
Thanks!

Hello! I was recently doing some practice work in the textbook and when they balanced the equation there was a fraction coefficient. I was always taught that you don't want a fraction as the coefficient so you usually multiple the entire equation by two. When I finished the problem and checked the a...

Good Afternoon!
I was just wondering if we are excepted to know how to derive the equations from their parents functions for the quiz this week? Or should we just know how the overall outcome equation?
Thanks a lot!!

How to determine polarity

Hello everyone!
Can someone explain to me how to correctly determine polarity?
I understand it has to do with the pull of the dipole but I have trouble understanding which way it pulls.
Thanks!

Strong/Weak Acid/Base

Is there a certain way we can determine if a acid is a strong or weak base along with its conjugate base/acid?
Or is it merely a memorization thing with the chart of strong/weak acids and bases?

Which is weaker/stronger?

Hello everyone!! During lecture on Friday, Dr. Lavelle went over how you can tell which is a stronger acid or base. And I was a little confused because I thought if the Ka value is higher, that would make it stronger. But he went over examples where the higher number meant it was the weaker one? Can...

Hello everyone!
I had a question about Acids and Bases, I was confused as too how we would be able to tell an acid and base based off a Lewis Structure. Can someone please explain how you're able to tell them apart?
Thanks! Hope everyone does well on their quizzes this week!

Hello my fellow chemistry people!
I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out how Hund's Rule ad Pauli's Principle are applied when you are trying to figure out an atom's configuration and how they affect your overall outcome.
Thanks a lot!

Quick question on kinetic energy [ENDORSED]

So I was looking at the lecture notes and I understand E(photon) = threshold energy + E(excess). So if the energy required to remove the electron is equal to the energy of the photon, where does that leave the kinetic energy, is it equal to zero?
