Re: 2013 FINAL Q6A

Carbon 2 is circled, if you check the solutions in the book. Carbon 3 is not sp2 hybridized, since it is bonded to 2 other carbon atoms and 2 hydrogen atoms.

Re: Homework Ch. 2 #30

I would first draw out the molecule so I can see how the oxygen is attached to the carbons. After drawing it out, you should be able to clearly see that there is an ether functional group. We know that in order to name an ether, we have to identify the longest chain and the shortest chain. The short...

Re: 2013 Quiz Preparation Question#5 for 1st Order Reactions [ENDORSED]

I used 2^n to get my answer 2 is a multiple of 64. So after I solve for n, n lets me know how many half-lives the process cycles through. In this case to get 1/64, we would have to raise (1/2) to a power of 6. This lets me know that the process has gone through 6 half lives so I would have to multip...

Re: 2013 Quiz Preparation Question#5 for 1st Order Reactions [ENDORSED]

Since this reaction is in first order, the half-live is equal to ln2/k. However we already know the half life, which is 0.43s. To find 1/64 of the concentration, we can set this equal to 1/2^n because 2 is a factor of 64. Then you solve for n, 1/2^n=1/64 and multiply the value you get by the given h...

Electrochemistry and half-reactions

I'm confused on how to make a cell reaction for Pt(s)|O2(g)|H+(aq)||OH-(aq)|O2(g)|Pt(s) on problem 14.11d in the textbook. In the solution manual, it says that the equation for the anode is O2 + 4H+ + 4e- --> 2H2O. Why is the H+ in this equation written as the reactant instead of the product?

Calculating Change in Entropy

When we calculate change in entropy, how do we know when to use the enthalpy of formation vs the enthalpy of vaporization/fusion?
For example, on question 9.15 why do we use the enthalpy of formation to calculate the freezing of H2O instead of using the enthalpy of fusion?

Re: CH 8 Which HW Problems to do first?

Will there be a list of recommended readings for each chapter? Like a certain chapter or section of the textbook to read before each lecture? I kind of go off the course reader. Depending on where we left off on the previous lecture, I just look at the topics on the next few pages in the course rea...
