Re: Bimolecular Nucleophile Substitution

I don't think it would matter that much, but I would write out the entire name just in case and put SN2 in parentheses.

Example on p. 96

Can someone clarify what it means in the course reader when it says, "More than 2 substituents on ring: compare each number and select name with lowest number"? For the example, the correct answer is 4-ethyl-2-methyl-1-propylcyclohexane, but why would 1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-propylcyclohexane b...

Drawing Structures

Is it mandatory to always draw the transition state in a reaction diagram? Or would we only draw it if the question specifically asks for it?

Re: Quiz 2 Winter 2017

Hi, can someone show me how they did #7, I know you use the first order integrated rate law, but when I work it out I am not getting the answer that is posted. First, you need to rearrange the first order integrated rate law and isolate k. (k=ln(A/A 0 )/t) After, plug in each value. k=ln(0.622M/0.7...

Re: Reversibility

Usually, problems will state if they are reversible or irreversible. Some hints to know if they are reversible are when delta Stotal is equal to zero, making delta Ssystem=-delta Ssurroundings, and when temperature is constant, while volume increases and pressure decreases. Hope this helps!

Re: Cell Diagrams

When drawing cell diagrams, I think the difference between using a line and comma is due to phase changes. If the element remains in the same phase (ex: aqueous to aqueous), you would use and comma. If the element undergoes a phase change (ex: aqueous to solid), you would use a line. Hope this helps!

Quiz 1 Preparation #5

I understand that we have to add all the enthalpy values at the end of the problem, but why do we have to reverse one of the reactions? How do you know which one to flip?

This is actually kind of a trick question! It is actually NOT spontaneous at any temperature. When ∆H is positive and ∆S is negative, ∆G is never spontaneous. Hope this helps!

Re: Memorizing Enthalpies???

I asked a UA this, and they said we don't have to memorize any bond enthalpies because they should be provided. I would double check this to make sure though!

Re: Naming Coordination Compounds

I think you would use ferrate instead of iron when the iron atom has an overall negative charge. For example, when the overall compound that includes an iron atom is negative, you wouldn't change it to "ironate," you would change it to ferrate. There are a few other metals, like copper, th...

Re: Naming Complexes

You would use prefixes bis-, tris-, tetrakis-, etc. when the compound already has another prefix such as di- or tri-. For exmaple, the ligand ethylene di amine has the prefix di-. If there were two of these ligands (en) 2 , then you would use the prefix bis- and name it bisethylenediamine. If there ...

Someone had asked this in lecture and Dr. Lavelle said he will keep us posted if there will be class on that Wednesday. He said it will depend on how far we are on the material, so I'm thinking he will decide closer to Thanksgiving break.

Yes, the * signifies anti-bonding. When calculating bond order, the sigma* or pi* orbitals allow you to recognize the number of electrons in that orbital.

I'd like to join the Summit study group! Just let me know when and where. I also think it'd be a good idea to plan the study sessions around the review sessions in Hedrick Hall.
