New kinds of structures

Can someone help me identify the differences between the aldehyde, ketone, and ether? Also what is meant by the ether attaches to the smallest chain??

Numbers

Can someone give me a brief summary of how everything should be ordered when naming the compounds? (Also was there something about alphabetical order as well?)

Re: Steady-State Approach vs. Pre-Equilibrium Approach [ENDORSED]

I don't think it matters whether the first or second step is the slow step. Lavelle said that it probably is better to just use the pre-equilibrium step because it is more straightforward. Remember they both give the same result.

Re: Equation Approaches

If I understood what Lavelle said correctly, it is always batter to use the pre-equilibrium method just because it is simpler.

Re: Rate Laws

1st rate: the amount of material you put in is directly proportional to its rate

2nd rate: the rate is proportional to the amount squared

0th rate: rate stays the same no matter how much you put in

Conducting Solids

Earlier Dr. Lavelle, spoke of some reactions that have not conducting solids. Can someone explain the reasoning behind this again?

Can someone just help me clarify when and how to use each formula we just learned for electrochemistry?

Re: standard enthalpy of combustion

I believe the main thing you may need to do, if anything, is write out a equation where the compound they give you mixes with O2 to make CO2 and H2O. That is not always necessary though. But other than that, there really isn't any difference in how you find this standard enthalpy in comparison to fi...

Bond Enthalpies

For bond enthalpies, if all that is given is the formula of a chemical compound, how would I know which bonds are broken, and what products are created? Also, are the enthalpies for the broken and formed bonds usually given in the problem? If not, where can they be found?

Re: Sublimiation

I may be wrong, but when I asked my TA this question, she said that in this course, the reverse of such phase change as sublimation would still be called the same. The difference is that the Delta H has a reversed sign: + to - .
