Re: 2013 Final Practice Exam, Question 4a; n=?
I believe each oxygen in the O2 in the reactants initially has an oxidation number of 0, while in the product all 4 oxygens have an oxidation number of -2. This would make each Fe in the product have an oxidation number of +2, while in the reactants each Fe had an oxidation number of 0. Thus, each F...

Nernst Equation at 25 degrees? [ENDORSED]
On the bottom of Page 51 of the Course Reader, it displays the Nernst Equation. Then, on the next page, it says that at 25 degrees Celsius, it has 2.303RT/F = 0.059V, then E (cell) = E (standard) - 0.0592 / n Log (10) Q. Where did the "2.303" come from? And shouldn't it be lnQ as it is in ...

Re: Expanded Valence Shell Electrons
For atoms like P, S, and Cl, it is possible for them to have a different number of electrons that are more than 8. The reason for this is because their d-orbitals are able to accept additional electrons. Since there are multiple d-orbitals available, the # of valence electrons does not have to be co...

Re: Hybridization Beyond sp3
Usually hybrid orbitals beyond sp3 do not appear on the midterm. However, it would be the safest bet to know the hybridizations covered in the course reader, which includes two hybrid orbitals beyond sp3: dsp3 and d2sp3 (page 103).

Re: Isoelectronic
Isoelectronic atoms are those that have the same # of electrons. Thus, no two different elements in non-cation, non-anion form can be isoelectronic. However, atoms of two different elements can be isoelectronic if one of the atoms is a cation or an anion. For example, K has one more atom than Neon. ...

"Calculate the wavelength of a 275 kg electric car traveling at a speed of 125 km/hr. Do electric cars have wavelike properties?" My question here isn't how to calculate the wavelength but rather the second part of whether the car has wavelike properties. The wording of this question made ...

Re: Significant figures in textbook Ex. 1.7 (p. 18) [ENDORSED]
The "2" means that the products of the numbers after it in the denominator have to be doubled. It is not a value that is obtained from the question itself, but rather from principle. Therefore, it is more like 2.000000000000... and the denominator is exactly doubled. Therefore, the "2...

Re: SI Unit Kg
As far as I've seen, in chemistry it is more common to put your answer in grams while in physics it is more common to put your answer in kilograms. In chemistry, however, unless the problem states otherwise, you should be able to put your answer in both kilograms or grams, whichever way your prefer,...

Re: Whole Number Ratios vs. Decimal Ratios
If it's asking for a mole ratio, then leaving it in decimal form should be alright, as I've seen a few examples of mole ratios that are in decimal form. If you change it to whole numbers, that's also fine.
