Re: Determine Z or E from a line structure
If the 2 constituents with the highest molar mass on each side are on the same side of the line structure, thenn the molecule is a cis molecule and a Z is used to name it. If the 2 constituents with the highest molar mass on each side are on different sides, then it is trans and a E is used to name ...

Re: Reaction Profiles
The problem should specify whether the reaction is exergonic or endergonic. If it is endergonic, the reactants are less than the products. If the reaction is exergonic, the reactants are higher than the products.

Re: Drawing Structures
A ring is used when the compound is a "cyclo", but a line structure is used for compounds that have a sufficient number of carbons.

Re: Intermediates vs. Catalysts
Yes you are correct. Intermediates are produced in the first reaction and then are reactants in the second reaction. However, catalysts are reactants in the first reaction and then products in the second reaction. They speed up the reaction, but are not consumed by the reaction.

Re: Acidic and Basic Solutions
I also have a question relating to the difference between acidic and basic solutions. When you are doing a basic redox reaction, can you use hydronium ions to balance the equation and then a the end substitute them for hydroxide ions? So basically, can you do basic redox reactions the same as acidic...

Re: Gibbs free energy for cell rxns: UNITS
I think the units are kJ/mol, but I think J/mol is also correct as long as you convert your numbers correctly.

Pressure vs. Volume [ENDORSED]
Why does the equation delta S=nRln(P1/P2) have initial pressure on top when the other equations that contain volume or temperature have final volume or final temperature on top?

Re: Calorimeters [ENDORSED]
A regular calorimeter occurs at a constant pressure because it is an open system, so it occurs at the pressure of the atmosphere. In a bomb calorimeter, volume is constant and it is an isolated system.

Re: Question about Enthalpy
According to the textbook, enthalpy allows us to keep track of energy changes only at a constant pressure, so the answer is no I believe.
