Thank you Dr. Lavelle for a fun two quarters! The extra effort you put into offering so many resources to us is much appreciated and so helpful for 14A and 14B! I've learned a lot from these classes and I'll definitely be prepared for 14C.

Using common names

When do we know when to use common names? I know Lavelle said for substituents but how familiar should we be in knowing them and what should indicate whether we use IUPAC or the common name for substituents?

If you're just looking to calculate and solve that equation, an easy way to think of it would be the number of electrons transferred in the redox reaction. That value would be n.

The naught sign means that the substance is in standard state so delta g naught would be calculated using standard enthalpy of formation and standard entropy values. A shortcut would be to look at the number of electrons that will be transferred. If you can calculate that without doing the full redox reaction that would work but I'm guessing that the problem will probably involve the redox reaction anyways. So there's no harm calculating it.
