Re: Cis & Trans

The Z and E designations come from the German words zusammen, which means together, and entgegen, which means opposite. You can find this in section 1.4 Geometric Isomers in the organic chem textbook (page 14 at the bottom)

Re: Entropy

Solids have lower molar entropy than liquids, and liquids have lower molar entropy of gases. In the gas phase, a compound has the highest molar entropy. I think there will be a decrease in entropy for this equation, because of the conversion of a gas and a liquid which have high molar entropy, into ...

Re: Heterogeneous Catalysts [ENDORSED]

Hi Jasmine, A heterogeneous catalyst is a catalyst (a substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being consumed in the reaction) that is in a different phase from the reactants. So basically, if all the reactants of an equation are in the gas phase and a catalyst that is present is a so...

Re: Quiz 2 Winter 2017

This might be dumb question, but could someone quickly explain the difference between the reaction rate and the rate constant? Reaction rate is defined as the change in concentration of one of the reactants or products divided by the time interval over which the change takes place. The rate constan...

Re: Quiz 1 Prep #5

I'm almost positive it's a typo and there has to be a coefficient of 2 for NH3. Without it, the reaction we are trying to find the standard enthalpy for is unbalanced. N2H4(ℓ) + H2(g) → NH3(g) : the reactant side has 2 nitrogen, 6 hydrogen and the product side has 1 nitrogen, 3 hydrogen, so there sh...

Re: Weak Acids and Bases

Because we know it is a weak acid/base, we know that Ka is very small, so we can approximate, and basically set that x equal to 0. I think the rule is if the given Ka is smaller than 10^-4, you can safely approximate.

Re: Hybridized Orbitals with d

There isn't a difference between sp^3d and dsp^3. I think it's usually written dsp^3 because d orbitals are lower in energy. It's like when writing the electron configurations: 3d10 4s2 etc.

Re: Electron Affinity

I read that the first Electron Affinity for Oxygen is negative because forming the O- ion actually releases energy, however, when forming O2-, it requires energy because you are forcing an electron into an already negative ion, so it will not go in willingly and needs an input of energy. This is why...

If you look up the molecular orbital diagram for NO-, you can see just about how much lower the more electronegative atom is drawn (in this case, oxygen)

Re: Rules for Writing Formula [ENDORSED]

Toolbox 17.1 in the book (page 741) has all of the rules listed and it's really helpful! Ligands are written in alphabetical order, by actual name, not symbol, also ignoring the Greek prefix that indicates the number of each one present. Step 8 states, "The name of a coordination compound (as d...

Identifying Polydentates? [ENDORSED]

I'm having trouble with the homework problem 17.33 where you're given some ligands and are told to identify which ones are mono/bi/polydentates. I know that polydentate signifies that the ligand can attach to more than one binding site simultaneously, but identifying them is a little confusing for m...

Adiba, I'm not 100% sure if this is correct but with the problems in the book, it seems that you have to find the individual charge of each ligand and of the central metal and add them up?
