You can drop the "x" when "K" is small. K is small when it is less than 10^(-3); however, it is safer when K is less than 10^(-5). You must check to see that the ionization is less than 5% so that taking the "x" out is valid.

To determine the number of hybrid orbitals in a molecular compound, look at the central atom's regions of electron density. The number of regions of electron density is the number of hybrid orbitals for that atom.
