Re: Half Reactions

Hydrogen is usually plus one, unless it is in a hydride, and oxygen is usually negative two. Elements themselves are equal to zero When solving for a compound, you take component you know and the charge of the compound and solve for the component you don't. Such as Fe2O3. It has an overall charge of...

Re: Exam Formula Sheet

Formula sheets and a periodic table are provided for all quizzes and exams. If you look in the back of the Chem 14B course reader (p 125) before the practice exams there is a constants sheet. I am guessing that that should be the same copy they give us on the tests. You will know for sure after you ...

Re: Why do we hybridize?

Hybrid orbitals tend to be more stable since they allow for a new molecule to have minimal electron repulsion, therefore creating stronger bonds.

Electron Configurations

Does anyone know that when we write electron configurations if we we are always supposed to write the equations in increasing numerical order? For example Iron (Fe):

[Ar] 3d^6 4s^2 compared to [Ar] 4s^2 3d^6

Re: Energy Level Model [ENDORSED]

The arrows are representing the electrons dropping from an excited state and based off of how far they drop will determine how much energy is given off, creating a certain color based on the element. I know R is the Rydberg Constant and that formula can only be used to determine the frequency of lig...
