Re: Room temperature

If the Gibb's free energy is negative, then the reaction will be spontaneous, and it will likely occur at room temperature.
You can also assess the deltaS and deltaH values to see if the reaction will take place at low, high, or all temperatures (see page 37 in the course reader).

for #1, why do we need "iso" in front of propyl? wouldn't the 4- signify the branching?

Re: General list of special case common names

I'm pretty sure the only ones we are going to see are "iso" and "neo." That should all be on page 94 in the course reader.

Re: Rate Law

I'm wondering this too. When do we have to use the pre-equilibrium approach and when can we just calculate the rate of the slowest step?

It can be fractional but I doubt we'll see that very often.

Re: Change in entropy= q/T [ENDORSED]

I have another question that has to do with the same equation. If T=0K like in the quiz, wouldn't that make entropy 0 or not exist? How can something have entropy when it is at absolute zero? It can't move and it's in crystalline structure.

Re: Rechargeable Batteries

This article seems pretty cool: "this new battery could allow for wireless devices to transmit their signals 30 times farther — or, perhaps more usefully, be equipped with a battery that’s 30 times smaller. If that wasn’t enough, this new battery is rechargeable — and can be charged 1,000 times...

units for enthalpy problems

Hi,
In homework question 8.59 it asks to calculate the standard rxn enthalpy for a given reaction and the answer is in KJ/mol, and 8.63 asks for the standard rxn of enthalpy for another equation but the answer is just given in KJ. What units should we use?
Thanks.

Sulfato is one of those ligands that is monodentate but can be bidentate (hence the asterix).

Re: Naming Coordinate Compounds

Hi! The oxidation state is calculated by looking at the charges of all the ligands inside of the brackets. For example, if the coordination complex is neutral (no charge written outside of the brackets) you can calculate what positive charge the transition metal has by determining the collective neg...

Atomic Spectra & Energy levels confusion

Hi! Today in class we learned about the equation E2= -hR/n2. I'm confused as to why the E2 is lower as the energy level n (1,2,...) gets bigger. I get that it makes the denominator get larger and larger which makes the result smaller, but conceptually I thought it would be the opposite...
