Re: Common names vs IUPAC

Most of the common names are easy to remember, and they do not contain digits, prefixes, and suffixes, unlike IUPAC. In the IUPAC naming the suffix is added to the functional group while in common names the name of the functional is written as the example. The example CH3CH2OH, the IUPAC name is eth...

Re: Heat Capacity: Lead vs. Diamond

I agree with Armin I think you might have mistaken lead for graphite. Diamond is known to be one of the best thermal conductors known, it is often a better thermal conductor than many metals including copper and aluminum.

Why did the bear dissolve in the water?
It was a polar bear! Polar bears are white bears. Polar compounds dissolve in water because water is a polar molecule (like dissolves like), while nonpolar compounds do not.

Re: Strong and Weak Acids

Take for example hydrogen chloride (HCl). Strong acids are completely ionized in water, that means that all the HCl break up into H and Cl ions. More H ions mean that the acid is more acidic. Strong acids also have a smaller pH. Weak acids, on the contrary, only partly ionize into H and other ions, ...

SF4 is VSEPR geometry of atom is a seesaw the two arrows in the bottom of the lewis structure don't cancel out making it polar. The electronegativity of F is around 4.0 and S is around 2.5, the electronegativity difference is greater than 0.5 making it polar. F has a partial negative charge, while S...

Re: Covalent and Ionic Character

So the bigger the difference between the electronegativity of two atoms, the more likely it is to be ionic. If the electronegativity is the same between elements, then the bond is likely covalent. To find out the actual electronegativity numbers of atoms, there are several charts online or in the te...
