Re: Electroplating
How I think it works is like this: Say you have a piece of zinc (maybe a ring), and you want to try and gold-plate it. What you would do is make it so that the zinc ring is treated as a cathode in a galvanic cell, and have it suspended in a solution that contains gold ions. Since reduction happens a...

Re: Purpose of Hydrogen Electrode
Basically, the Hydrogen electrode is used to serve as a generic starting point for all reduction potentials. The values of E given for each equation on the Standard Reduction Potentials chart is the voltage that would be given if each of those reactions were done with the hydrogen electrode being th...

Re: Naming Coordination Compounds
Good question! Basically, you need to see how many other ligands are bound to the central atom (the transition metal), and see if anyone of them has a negative charge. For example, if you have the ion [CoCl3]-, you see that there are three Cl- ions. Therefore, they all have an overall charge of 3-. ...

Re: Molecular Orbital theory
I think that the M.O. theory is used to determine the structure of a molecule, especially if it has delocalized electrons (as in, the electrons are not tied to any pair of atoms, like in benzene).

Energy Level Changes in Orbitals
So, I know that orbitals have electrons and each orbital can be found at certain energy levels (e.g. 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, etc). My question is, if an electron is excited to a higher energy level, will it stay in the same type of orbital as it was at first (as in, from the 1s to the 2s orbital), or will i...
