Determine Z or E from a line structure

Generally, how does someone know whether a molecule is Z or E just from the line structure?

Thank you for being such a great professor! Chemistry will be different without you next quarter.

Re: 1.17 in the organic textbook

"Neo" is not just limited to cycloalkanes. There should be a pretty good drawing delineating neo alkanes in the book.

Re: Quiz 2

Doing the homework questions in the textbook and going over the examples throughout the chapter are, to me, the best ways to prepare for a quiz. Go over the material with friends too!

Re: relationship between delta H and q [ENDORSED]

Like the others said above, q and delta H are interchangeable only when a system is under constant pressure. However, we can calculate q using delta H during phase changes. q = (mass)(delta H at a phase change).

Re: Ka/Kb question

Because strong acids and bases dissociate completely in water, you could use simple stoichiometry to determine the concentration of H3O+ or OH-. Because weak acids/bases don't dissociate completely in water, you're going to need to use the equilibrium constant.

Re: Coordination number?

The coordination number refers to the number of atoms directly bonded to the transition metal. If one of the atoms shares a double bond with the transition metal, it still counts as 1 when finding the coordination number.

Re: Chem 14B and 14BL [ENDORSED]

Though it's definitely possible to take Chem 14B and 14BL in the same quarter, I think it's actually quite rare that people take them in the same quarter. I've heard people start LS 2 winter quarter and hold off 14BL until their second year. Ultimately, if you feel sure enough with your understandin...

The t-shaped and trigonal pyrimidal shapes both have the VSEPR formula AX3. How does one know whether a molecule is t-shaped or trigonal pyrimidal?
