Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Dear Dr. Lavelle,
Thank you for all you've done for the class, from the time you've invested into making the solid lectures, to organizing all the resources available (bruincast, review sessions, etc). Your attentiveness and effort is appreciated, and It's been a tough but memorable quarter.

Re: Question about 1,6-dichlorocyclohexene

In this case, I think it's because the 1 before cyclohexene is unnecessary (maybe not the best word to use). There are no functional groups like alcohol, so the double bond should automatically be assumed to be between C 1 and 2, and doesn't need to be specified. Though, I don't think points would b...

Re: Picture of difference between sec/iso and neo/tert?

Building on that, the "Y" (iso-)/ "triple branched" (neo-) structures occur at the end of the substituent. "Sec" and "Tert" refer to how many Carbons in the substituent are connected to the C between it and the rest of the molecule. The end of this video might...

Re: Rate Order

I think it can be solved using experimental data and ratios (method we're using now), except the exponent (n) would be a fraction?

Re: Practice Midterm Winter 2013: Q5B

Another way you can look at it is the amount of "disorder," I think. CF bonds are more polar than CH bonds, so having 4 CF bonds vs. 2 makes for more "disorder" and thus larger molar entropy.

Re: 9.35

Not sure about this, but I think entropy of system A > entropy of system C because monatomic gases result in more "disorder" in the system (have more possible "states"). Hope this helps.

Re: Standard Enthalpy of Formation Course Reader example

The standard reaction enthalpy is divided by 2 because the example is looking for the formation of 1 mole of CH3CH2OH, whereas the rxn enthalpy gives the kJ amount for 2 moles of CH3CH2OH. Hope this helps.

Re: Method 2: Bond Enthalpies [ENDORSED]

When using bond enthalpies, it's just summation, not [summation of products] - [summation of reactants]. As stated in the example, double bond C=C and single bond H-Br is broken (+978kJ, requires energy). Single bonds C-C, C-H, and C-Br are formed (-1036kJ, releases energy). Adding the two together,...
