Re: The different Nernst equations

Yes they are equivalent (T=298K). Dr. Lavelle mentioned in class that the log version is frequently used to consider pH.

Re: Haloalkane/Haloalkene Naming question

Yes, alkenes are prioritized over alkynes for numbering.

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

Those numbers refer to the carbon to which the halogen is attached, numbering follows the same rules, so the lowest numbering scheme is chosen.

Re: Which process does more work?

You'll want to calculate the work done by each pathway.
Path A is done at constant pressure so use W=-P*DeltaV (irreversible pathway)
Path B is reversible expansion so use W=-nrT*ln(V2/V1) (reversible pathway)

Re: Degeneracy

The formula to find entropy from degeneracy is: S = Kb * ln(W)

Where W is degeneracy of a system and Kb is the Boltzmann Constant = 1.3807e-23 J/K

Re: Midterm winter 2013 question #4

Because it is an ideal gas, the equations are equivalent due to Boyle's Law. So either one would work and would lead you to the same answer :)

Re: 8.45

The reaction enthalpy of deltaH = +358.8 kJ specifically describes the situation where one mol of S8 reacts. When 1.25 mol is reacted, then the reaction enthalpy (notice it is positive so heat is absorbed) is also multiplied by this new amount of reactant.

(358.8 kJ)(1.5 mol S8) = 448.5 kJ

Re: Sublimation Heating Curve

Yes, the heat of sublimation is the sum of the enthalpy of fusion and the enthalpy of vaporization. Because enthalpy is a state function, even though in sublimation substances do not pass through the liquid phase, the total amount of energy required is still the sum of the individual amounts of ener...
