Adding to this, the solution manual has Ni(s) on the cathode side, even though it was not part of the final reaction. I understand that it is used as the conducting electrode for the cathode, however, how did they know to use Ni? And how do we know when we have to add a conducting electrode?

It depends on the data given in the question. For example, when multiplying and dividing, your answer will have the same number of sig figs as the number given in the problem with the least number of significant figures.

For number 2:
Because degeneracy (W) refers to the number of ways of achieving a certain energy state, and gas molecules occupy many more states than liquid or solid molecules, Wg will be greater than Wl which is greater than Ws for the same reason.
