Slow and Fast Steps [ENDORSED]
I was wondering if any of you could please explain why the the order for which the slow/fast steps of a reaction matters. Why do we use one way to solve for a reaction that is fast in the first step and is slow in the second step, and another way for a reaction that is slow in the first step and is ...

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers
#8 on Quiz 1 Preparation says, "For reaction: 2C+2H2=C2H4, DeltaH= +52.3 kJ/mol and DeltaS= -53.07 J/K*mol at 298 K. At what temperature will this reaction be spontaneous?" Initially, I thought the formula needed to solve for the temperature was DeltaG= DeltaH - T*DeltaS but then I saw tha...

Re: Degeneracy
Degeneracy, also known as W, is the number of ways you can rearrange a molecule. You can find this by drawing the lewis structure of the molecule in question and see how many ways you can draw the structure. Depending on whether the problem specifies if they want you to find the residual entropy of ...

Re: Work Done by or on the System [ENDORSED]
This question was asked during discussion today and the TA told us that to make the whole concept of "work done by or on the system" easier to understand, we should think of ourselves as the system. When something is given to us (work done by the system), we are happy (positive value). Whe...

Re: Cha. 8 HW Problem #57
also, can you explain why we need to combine the 3 reactions to find the reaction we are looking for? Can't we just plug in the values (-1300, -1560, and -1560) we are given for C2H2, H2, and C2H6 to find the delta H of the reaction from the start without doing all the other work?
