Yes! You actually can use both IUPAC and common naming for the same organic compound. We usually use common names with IUPAC naming to make the name look more concise. You will be able to find examples in the organic chemistry textbook under the section for common names.

I had a question about the reaction from Butan-2-ylium to (S) Isomer or (R) Isomer. The textbook says that the intermediate carbocation has a trigonal planar geometry and can therefore only let the nucleophile approach from two directions. But why can't there be three? Can't the nucleophile approach...

I had a follow up question on cell diagrams, for #23 on the hw problems why does liquid mercury not need platinum? Is it only gases and aqueous solutions that need the platinum? Thanks!

To add on, one of the ways I got through electrochemistry in high school was with this easy acronym: OIL RIG(Oxidation is Loss, Reduction is Gain). For some reason I have always remembered this, so I hope this helps!

If it's not on the table it is most likely an element that is in its standard state, so I it would be 0.
