Re: 2.16

I have a quick follow up question. For this problem the double bond gets priority over the functional group for the numbering(3-chloro-3-bromo-propene). I thought that functional groups had higher priority than double or triple bonds? Is it only for the haloalkanes that double and triple bonds get h...

Re: Naming of molecules

Yes! You actually can use both IUPAC and common naming for the same organic compound. We usually use common names with IUPAC naming to make the name look more concise. You will be able to find examples in the organic chemistry textbook under the section for common names.

I had a question about the reaction from Butan-2-ylium to (S) Isomer or (R) Isomer. The textbook says that the intermediate carbocation has a trigonal planar geometry and can therefore only let the nucleophile approach from two directions. But why can't there be three? Can't the nucleophile approach...

Re: Cell Diagrams

I had a follow up question on cell diagrams, for #23 on the hw problems why does liquid mercury not need platinum? Is it only gases and aqueous solutions that need the platinum? Thanks!

Re: reduction vs. oxidation

To add on, one of the ways I got through electrochemistry in high school was with this easy acronym: OIL RIG(Oxidation is Loss, Reduction is Gain). For some reason I have always remembered this, so I hope this helps!

9.91

Reflecting on 9.91, does this mean that at boiling points, melting points, etc delta G is 0?

Re: Ch 8 #31 (8.31)

To add to this, the reason why Cv is 3/2R is because if you add heat to a container filled with gas with a constant volume, the gas particles start to bounce around and store heat in their movement. They can move up and down, side to side, and essentially in the x, y, and z directions. We need to so...

Re: Bond Enthalpy and Enthalpy of Formation

If it's not on the table it is most likely an element that is in its standard state, so I it would be 0.
