Re: Catalyst

In the Pre-Equilibrium Approach does the slow step always determine the rate law? In any reaction systems, the slow step will always determine the rate of reaction, thus the rate law. The purpose of using Pre-Equilirbrium Approach is to substitute other terms with intermediate, which is not suppose...

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

Will we be penalized for not including 1 in naming? For example can we just write 2-methyloct-4-enol instead of 2methyloct-4-en-1ol? Because there are other substituents, it is important to describe the location of the alcohol group But isn't that implied? Dr. Lavelle said that you can omit the 1 o...

Homework 9.13

The problem states "During the test of an internal combustion engine, 3.00 L of nitrogen gas at 18.5 C was compressed suddenly (and irreversibly) to 0.500 L by driving in a piston. In the process, the temperature of the gas increased to 28.1 C. Assume ideal behavior. What is the change in ent...

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

Would you put a dash inbetween naming with groups when one ending has a vowel and the start has a vowel? For example, would it be bromooctane or bromo-octane?

Picture of difference between sec/iso and neo/tert?

I have read all the old chem community posts and still cannot seem to figure out the difference. Does anyone know any good instructional videos or pictures to teach me?

Is something an electrophilic addition because of the first step or slowest step?

In examples when HBr is added and it is an electrophilic addition, it says that because H^+ is an electrophile it is an electrophilic reaction. However, the slower second step involves adding a Br nucleophile. So is it an electrophilic addition because the first step, adding the H^+ is an electrophi...

Cheap place to get the solutions manual?

I already have the textbook and I have not been able to find the solutions manual by itself for under $150. Does anyone know a cheaper place to get it?

Changing States

Is there a way to determine to what extent a molecule has changed states when it is in-between, for example, liquid and gas and the temperature is remaining constant?
