Re: HW 8.73 (Bond Enthalpies

I'm not getting the correct answer for part A. I get a -369kJ/mol but the answer is -597kJ/mol? Can anyone help me with this please? Never mind, I figured it out. C6H6 is benzene, and all of benzene's carbon bonds are resonance bonds, which have a different bond enthalpy than a single carbon bond o...

Final 2013 Q6 - Numbering

Hi everyone!
Can anyone explain why the methyls of the cyclohexane in Question 6A of the 2013 Final are numbered 1,5,5,6 and not 1,2,3,3?

Final 2013 Q5 - Transition States

Can anyone please explain to me how one would come up with the transition state as shown in Q5 Part C of the 2013 Final? Which bonds are being formed/broken, and what are the two H's?

Re: 2013 Final Practice Exam, Question 4a; n=?

I have one more question! Can anyone go through the math portion with me? I don't really understand what goes on from 0.044V=0.0257/4lnQ. How do we get that Q=942.23? I get a much smaller answer doing this math.

Why does 2Fe(s) in the reactants have an oxidation number of zero again? Is it because it is in it's most stable form or something like that?

Re: Naming [ENDORSED]

On page 93 of the course reader, we choose 4-ethyl-2,2-dimethyl-hexane as the correct name of the molecule instead of 3-ethyl-5,5-dimethyl-hexane. We are always supposed to choose the name with the lowest number, so why do we choose 4-ethyl instead of the 3-ethyl? Is it dependent on the dimethyl only?

Re: Nucleophile and Electrophile

In the course reader, we can also determine electrophiles and nucleophiles based on delta positive or negative, right? Can anybody explain that to me more clearly please? Thanks!

Re: Quiz 2 Winter 2017

Hi everyone and sorry, this might be a dumb question, but will we need to know page 65 in the course reader? I don't want to be surprised if radioactivity shows up. Thank you so much!

Quiz One - #5 Calculating Heat

Hello! Can anybody explain how to do #5 on our first quiz? I knew the equations to use, I think I just didn't use the right heat capacities. How do I know which ones to use?

Inert Conductors

Hello, could anyone give me a brief explanation of inert conductors again? When are the instances when we need to use them and when we don't, and what effect do they have on the reactions taking place?
Thanks!

HW Problem 8.37 Need Help

Hello everyone, could someone please help me with problem 8.37? I'm not sure what step to take first. a) At its boiling point, the vaporization of 0.597 mol CH4(l) requires 4.76kJ of heat. What is the enthalpy of vaporization of methane? b) An electric heater was immersed in a flask of boiling ethan...

Relationship Between Volume and # of States

Just looking for a bit of clarification after rereading my lecture notes for the second law of thermodynamics. I wrote down that the relationship between volume and the number of possible states is a ratio. What is that ratio again or how do we find it?
