Reaction Mechanism in More Detail

When dealing with an electrophilic addition reaction, is the goal to breakup double bonds? In the course reader, the example of HBr and 2-Butene, says to break up the double bond. Is that always going to be the case for other reactions? Is it best to try and get rid of the double bond?

Cell Diagram

When drawing or writing the cell diagram, when do you know to reverse the half reaction? Is it reversed for the anode or the cathode?

Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

Did you know that oxygen went for a second date with potassium?

How did it go?

It went OK2!

Example of isolated System

What are some good examples of an isolated system? I understand that energy nor matter can be transferred, but I can't really think of any good examples of an isolated system since most are either closed or open.

By or On the System? [ENDORSED]

Hello, my question is how would I be able to identify whether the work was done by a system or on the system? Would I have to identify what type of reaction is occurring in order to determine what did the work?

Strong Acid-Strong Base Titration Calculations

Okay so I am a little confused on how to calculate a pH value. In my PLF session I was told that if you have a strong acid and strong base calculation problem we can use the given concentration in the problem to solve for the initial pH. However, in lecture we had to do extra math in order to find a...

Re: KA VS KB

I am not completely positive, but I believe that we use Ka for acids and Kb for bases. So far we have only used Ka for weak acids and Kb for the bases.

Ligands and Coordination Numbers

How do I know many bonds each ligand can make? Or how can I determine which ligands can make more than one bond? I don't exactly remember what was said in lecture about the ligands that had an asterisk next to them in the course reader.

Re: Z>8, Z<8

As long as one atom in the compound is less than 8, then you will have to use the z<8 diagram. It doesn't matter if one atom is greater than 8, you still have to use the z<8 diagram because of the atom that is less than 8.

Re: Mass % Composition

It is unnecessary to calculate the % mass composition when you are given the grams because you can just go from grams to moles. It is a lot quicker to use the grams to convert to moles rather than finding % calculate composition. (You also save time in your calculations.)

Quiz 2

I know that we discussed during lecture that there are many ways to draw a lewis structure for chemical bonds, but on the quiz will there be only one specific way to correctly draw a lewis structure?

I am having difficulty understanding how to determine the ionization energy level of an atom. Is there any way to figure out which atom has a lower ionization level for a lewis structure?

Indeterminacy Equation

How can I tell when a number is unrealistic when using the indeterminacy equation? I understand that when we are working with a problem that deals with Heisenberg's Indeterminacy equation, it is unrealistic to get a velocity greater than the speed of light (3.0 x 10^8 m.s) and also for an electron t...
