Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle
Dear Dr. Lavelle, I can't tell you enough how grateful I am to have have the pleasure of having you as a professor for the past two quarters. I have always struggled with chemistry but you've allowed me to grow and learn from my mistakes and you've always encouraged us to do our best. Thank you a mi...

Re: Nucleophile vs Electrophile
I think it has to do with whether or not the molecule has electrons that are readily available. If it does, it would be considered a nucleophile

Ideal Gas Law- delta U
Hi! So I realize that when V is constant, w=0 (although I'm not sure why), but why is delta U =0 when delta T is 0? Is it derived from equations or is just something we're supposed to know?

Re: Quiz 1 Preparation Answers
Can someone please explain why #8 is "no temperature"? since delta G = delta H - T* delta S, and delta S is negative, the value of delta G will always be positive, no matter what value is inserted. In order for a process to be spontaneous, delta G has to be negative, and in this case, no ...

Re: Chapter 12 Question 19
In sum, you should be using a variable, and not a value. So the molarity of HCl would be (.12)*([HCl]). From here you can go about the change in pH which would be -log((0.12*HCl)/(HCl)) which gives you 0.92. So the change in pH is 0.92.

How do we determine what the central atom is? I know I wrote it down somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Was it the higher electronegative atom?

Hi guys! So I'm a little unclear on whether the work function and the threshold energy are the same thing? I know the work function is the energy required to remove an electron but wouldn't it be the same number as the threshold energy?

My TA told us that it'll be everything we've learned so far. Also on Professor Lavelle's website, the quiz and exam schedule is up and it says quiz 1 will cover all material from the beginning (including fundamentals) through October 7th, which is Friday's lecture (: I hope that helps!

Re: Homework problem Fundamentals E.15
So I think what's happening is that there is no specific metal that they're asking for. So you'd start off by figuring out the mass of OH which is 34.02. You subtract that from the overall mass and it leaves you with 40.08 (the mass of Ca). Since they're asking for SULFIDE, you can add the mass of s...
