Re: Practice Problems

Is there a similar rule for using E and Z describing 8 membered ring structures but in branched and non-ring structures?

Re: homework 15.23 C

Find the concentration of A after the concentration of .034 M of B is created. This should be .153 (A initial) minus 2(2molA/1molB) times .034 which is .085 mol/L of A. From this, k=ln(Ain./Afin.)/time; k=ln(.153/.085)/115 sec = 0.00511. Got that equation from ln[A]=-kt+ln[Ain.], ln[A]-ln[Ain.]=-kt,...

Re: pseudo rate law vs non-pseudo rate law

The pseudo rate law is for reactions with more than one reactant, so k' is found by making one reactant concentration small and the others large, making the large concentrations essentially constant. This allows you to ignore the reactants with large concentrations, so k' would only depend on the re...

Re: Gibbs free and Standard Gibbs free

standard gibbs free energy is fixed for a reaction and temperature, while gibbs free energy varies. The gibbs free energy will change throughout a reaction as the molar amounts of the products and reactants will change.

If there's a Kb or Ka then it's a weak acid or base. I don't think we need to memorize the k values, so if one is given, then it's weak.

Re: Strong/Weak Acid/Base

For acids the halogens except fluorine form strong acids. Then that just leaves perchloric, nitric, and sulfuric acid, and arguably chloric acid. The alkali metal hydroxides and oxides are considered strong bases. If you think of it that way then you only have to memorize some of the strong compounds.

Re: Quiz 3 #7

I think you need to find the concentrations of the 2 gases because the problem gives you Kc, and from that find the Qc value, which is what the first part is asking. The second part is then asking whether or not the forward or reverse reaction is favorable based on the Qc value.

Re: s character

The number of hybrid orbitals depends on how many regions of electron density there are, which is the sum of the number of bonded atoms and lone pair electrons. If there are 4 regions of electron density for say carbon, then you will need 4 hybrid orbitals made up of 3 p and 1 s, giving you 4 equal ...

Re: Manipulating the Photoelectric Effect Equation

You can solve for the velocity of an electron:
E(electron)=E(photon)-work
E(e)=1/2(mvsquared)=kinetic energy of an electron
1/2(mvsquared)=E(p)-work
mvsquared=2(E(p)-work)
vsquared=2/m(E(p)-work)
v=squareroot(2/m(E(p)-work)
