Re: Determining cis, z, trans, or e [ENDORSED]
Cis means same side which is the same as Z while trans means the opposite side which means E. So cis is always Z and trans is always E.

Chair will always be the most stable conformation because it requires less energy. The boat conformation needs more energy due to the flagpole interaction and the pairs of eclipsed Rs.

Re: Determining reduction or oxidation
You need to find the charge on the ion in the reactant and then see the charge change in the product. So if a reactant had cr3+ but had a charge of 2+ in the products it is a reduction because it gained one electron.

Re: Drawing the Transition State
Transition states are when there are the dashed lines indicating broken or formed bonds. They are the middle state between reactants and products. So if the slow step is the first step the graph will have a higher hump on the first transition step.

The book explains it. It doesn't start at ethyl because 3,3>1,1. You only assign the lowest numbering to the first alphabetical hydrocarbon when the number total are the same.

Its hard to explain but I think its because you want the smaller numbers. The other way you would have 2,2-dimethyl rather than 1,1-dimethyl. But it's confusing.

The hydrogen can't go to the middle one because the bromide needs to go to the carbon in the middle in order for the product to have less dipole moment.

The show step has two double sided arrows signifying that they can be reversible, one sided arrows means that they are at equilibrium therefore the slow step can have two arrows. It is not possible for the slow step to be at equilibrium.

I know this is late but when given multiple steps is the overall rate always reliant on the slow step even if the slow step is also the first step and an equilibrium?

You should also look for the one with higher degeneracy, the number of ways of getting an energy state. Its basically the different ways you can arrange a Lewis structure.

Re: Approximating X
The explanation is on page 161 on the course reader. You can take X out when you know it is very small, so when K is a very small number. The example Lavelle said in class was that if you have a million dollars and you give away $100 you still have around a million dollars and so when finding the co...

The name helps but you need to know the charge of each element and which is neutral to find the overall charge. Memorize the chart in the course reader because it shows what is negative and what is neutral.

For Cl- you can just do [Ar] because it has the exact same electron configuration. When chloride gains an electron it will have full orbitals like the noble gas argon.
