Re: Chemistry 14B Enrollment

In addition to this question, I heard today (in my Life Sci 30A lecture) that the Life Science 30B co-requisite is no longer required to enroll in Chemistry 14B--so that people who couldn't get into 30B might still take their next quarter of Chem. Is this true? It seems to still be a requirement whe...

Re: How to find the roman numeral when naming compounds [ENDORSED]

Hello there! I'll try to answer this. When naming coordination compounds, the roman numeral is the oxidation number of the transition metal. So, if you were dealing with Fe 2+ , the oxidation number would be (II), and if it were Fe 3+ it would be (III), and so on. In this case, we have to figure out...

Re: Ionic Character in Molecules

Not a frequent poster, but I will try my best to answer! There are two essential concepts you need to know, I think: 1. As the difference in electronegativity between two atoms increases, so does the ionic character of their bond (because they are "sharing" the electrons less equally). 2. ...

Re: Good Visual

Kudos for finding this cool interactive thing! I find it very helpful to see animations of the orbitals and actually go through the process of "building" the atom myself. This is a good tool for that.

Quiz 1 Prep: Fall 2015, Question #1 [ENDORSED]

I was able to figure out the first part, but my trouble is with this question in the workbook: "How many milliliters of the stock solution would you need to add to obtain a 250 mL 0.650 M NaOH solution?" (Given that in the previous part of the question, we prepared a 3.0*10^3 mL stock solu...

Why is UV radiation more harmful than infrared?

When I was younger, my sister warned me not to peer through the microwave window while food was cooking because of radiation that might be leaking out through the door. Since then, I've learned that microwaves are not likely to hurt me. This is confirmed in Chapter 1 which shows that microwaves are ...
