Organic molecule formulas

Does anyone know if we supposed to memorize all the general molecular formulas between alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and all the cyclo structures?
Thanks in advance.

Naming alkenes [ENDORSED]

Hello, I have a question regarding the naming of an alkene. On page 12 of the organic chemistry textbook there is a molecule named 1,3-But-a-diene. I understand the prefix signifies the 4 carbon parent chain and the diene represents the 2 carbon carbon double bonds on carbon 1 and 3, but what does t...

Ambident Nucleophile [ENDORSED]

I was wondering what is the key determining factor that allows some molecule to be ambident nucleophiles whereas others are not so easily characterized that way?
Thanks in advance.

I am a little uncertain about catalysts and rate laws. I understand they do not alter the rate constant in a zero order reaction as seen in the course reader but do they affect rate laws in higher orders?
Thanks in advance.

Can someone explain the difference between the rate constants k and k prime.
Thanks in advance.

Nernst Equation [ENDORSED]

Can someone please explain why problem 14.97 assumes the cell potential is negative, indicating a non galvanic cell? The question never states electrolysis occurs.

Thanks in advance

Calculating entropy

Hi, I am having a difficulty understanding which equation to use when calculating the change in entropy when temperature changes. The first equation being n*R*natural log(T2/T1) and the second equation is n* Cs(specific heat)*natural log(T2/T1)? Can anyone explain which conditions are needed to use ...

Units for Gibbs free energy

Does anyone know if the standard Gibbs free energy of a reaction should be written in joules per mole or just joules? Is it similar to how we address the units for standard reaction enthalpies?

Re: Post All Chemistry Jokes Here

If I were an endothermic chemical reaction at equilibrium, you would push me to the right because you are hot:)

Hey guys, I'm slightly confused on this topic. What is the difference between the standard enthalpy of a reaction versus the standard enthalpy of formation?
Can someone please explain.
