Re: Winter 2014 Q3

Why is Cu(NO3)2 not considered for making a galvanic cell? Does it not also have good conducting qualities since nitrates are soluble in water?

Winter 2015 Final #9A [ENDORSED]

For question 9A, why is the correct answer trans (E) when the 4 Carbons and respective hydrogens have a higher atomic number than the Chlorine on the opposite side?

Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you for putting in so much effort to help us succeed in the class. Chemistry Community, peer review sessions and all other resources have been helpful for me in Chem 14A/B. I am also incredibly grateful to have a professor who teaches with passion for the subject.

The optimist sees the glass half full. The pessimist sees the glass half empty. The chemist sees the glass completely full, half with liquid and half with air.

Re: Problem 14.15

@lilyjustine_1G I think the KOH is added to the cell diagram because an aqueous solution consisting of OH- ions is needed to supply the reaction with OH- ions. It's not added to the cathode side because Ni(OH)3 can supply with the OH- ions to Cd(OH)2 by itself. Not completely sure but this is the on...

Re: Problem 8.19

When I convert the copper into moles and use the molar specific heat for calculations, I end up with a different value for the heat than when I directly use the specific heat. Using molar specific heat, I get (500.0g Cu) * (1 mol/63.55g Cu) * (33J/K*mol) * (78K) = 20251 J for the copper. But using s...

Why is Pz orbital used to represent sigma bond in M.O theory? [ENDORSED]

Is this experimentally determined, or is there a specific reason why it is the Pz, and not any of the other p orbitals that represent the sigma bond in Molecular Orbital theory?

Re: Electron affinity

Do the noble gases have a high electron affinity even if they have a complete octet? Ex: Comparing Ne and Cl, which has a higher electron affinity? Electron affinity is the energy released when an extra electron is added. Knowing that noble gases have a complete octet and is at its lowest energy st...

Electrons having same energy between same shell?

On page 42 of the textbook it reads, "There are one 2s- and three 2p-orbitals in this shell; in hydrogen, they all have the same energy."

How come there is no energy difference between two different orbitals? Does this also apply to other elements or is it just hydrogen?

I remember that Professor Lavelle mentioned that when dealing with optics, use light as a wave, and use light as a particle when dealing with atoms and electrons.
