Yes, axial are the ones that are vertical while equitorial (think equator) are the horizontal-ish ones

Re: Drawing Newman structures

In lecture, Lavelle went over how to draw them. Here are some key things he went over: 1. They are always drawn in the perspective of the carbon chain 2. The carbon in the back is drawn like a circle, with its respective hydrogens coming out of the circle. 3. Make sure you specify whether it is a st...

Make sure to also flip or "reverse" the equation when needed! If you're finding E, remember that when you multiply the equation to get the same number of moles, you DO NOT multiply E like we did in Hess's law. We just switch the sign if we reverse the equation.

Re: Derivations

My best guess is that we will have to know all of the equations given to us that are not on the formula sheet, and the best way to know those is to derive them :/

you just answered your own question lol
if k is in between those values, then neither the reactants or the products are favored. if it is less, then reactants are favored, and if it is greater, then the products are favored

Re: What to do when a Energy is given in kJ*mol-1?

We never did this in lecture, but yes, you divide by Avogadro's number. For that specific question, once you got the energy, you have find the wavelength and then determine if it was in the range of visible light. (visible light being from 400-700 nm)

Re: 2012 Midterm Q3c

I'm pretty sure that if you know the wavelength for visible light, which is 400-700 nanometers, then you should be fine. (Red being around 700 nm, violet being around 400.)

Re: "best" lewis structure

The best Lewis structure is one where the FC is zero. Ideally, you want the FC to be between one and negative one. The overall charge is the same as each one's FC combined. So if it's CN-, you would want the addition of all the formal charges to be negative one

Re: Exceptions

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you look at the periodic table Lavelle provided, you can see the patterns of electron configuration there. There's usually a pattern, except when it gets to chromium, instead of following the trend and being [AR] 3d^4 4s^2, it became [AR]3d^5 4s^1. The electr...

My TA said we could use either one, but since you can get partial credit in the quizzes, he recommended we use the one Lavelle was talking about so that there are less chances of making a mistake and more chances of getting partial credit if we do!
