Re: Midterm Winter 2017

Will values like specific heat of different compounds/ elements be given when they're necessary or should I memorize a few basic ones like water, ice and steam?

Re: Electrochemistry Videos

I know that it's directed to high schoolers, but crash course videos always help me when I need help with the very basics of the topic. Not so much the math, but for electrochemisty he does a good job explaining the basics of what's going on during reactions.

Re: Reading the textbook

Are any textbook problems going to be included on the quiz and midterm or are they just going to be problems assigned in the homework? I usually do more than just the assigned problems anyway and sometimes I would find some similar questions during 14A with Lavelle.

Re: Bruincast

Are there going to be chem modules for this class like there were for chem 14A with the pre test and practice problems? I found them really helpful last quarter.

Re: Random Enrollment Checks

Is it likely that within the quarter seats will be available so students aren't sitting on the floor? I feel bad for people with another class right before Chem begins and have to sit on the steps.

my Ucla is saying that I need a PTE number to enroll in Chem 14B. Do we have one as a class or do I email Lavelle directly?

Does he curve the Midterm? If he curves it, doesn't that mean that 83%, the class average becomes a C?

Re: Net Dipole Moment

I believe for dipole moment you have to act like the molecules bonded to the central structure are vectors. If the molecules are "pointing" in the same (or same-ish) direction, then the vector would be large, and the dipole moment would be large, as opposed to if the molecules were on oppo...

On his website it says quiz 2 covers everything from chapters 2 and 3 and in the reader it says everything up to October 21st. So my best guess is that he'll discuss it tomorrow

Do the TAs take into account your completion of all the practice tests in the workbooks to give you your potential quiz grade saving points or can I just pick and choose problems as I please?

Memorization Tricks

These were horrible for me to remember in high school. Does anyone have any tricks or mnemonic devices for memorizing hybridization? I'd like to start early on these since historically, I had so much trouble with them. Thank you!

Re: Calculating Molecular and Empirica Formulas

Usually, when I find myself off by more than about .2 (or something small but kind of annoying like that), I look back at my work and make any numbers I rounded while showing my work more precise. For example, if I calculated the molarity, I probably rounded that number from 3.94659284639 to 3.95. I...
